Exchange

Exchange is a participatory performance that investigates reciprocity in relationships, communities, and labor through forms of value that are often invisible, unrecognized, or difficult to quantify. Continuing an ongoing research into care, attention, witnessing, maintenance, sacrifice, repair, and emotional labor, the work asks what people are willing to give, hold, reveal, remember, or carry for one another within a temporary collective structure. Participants choose between three lines—Care, Witness, and Sacrifice—each organized around a distinct mode of relation and composed of simple instruction-based actions that are repeated throughout the performance. Rather than producing a fixed narrative or spectacle, these tasks generate an evolving social choreography shaped by the decisions, vulnerabilities, and encounters of those present. Ordinary gestures such as offering tea, learning someone's name, listening to a confession, or guiding a stranger through the space are repositioned as forms of labor that require attention, trust, and responsibility. By placing these often overlooked acts at the center of the performance, *Exchange* questions how value is assigned, how relationships are negotiated through giving and receiving, and how communities are continually sustained through everyday practices of care. The work resists transactional models of exchange, instead proposing reciprocity as an ongoing process of mutual dependence, where care is neither a commodity nor an obligation but something collectively produced, shared, and continually renegotiated through participation.
